April is Foot Health Awareness Month. Our feet are often overlooked until we have an injury when we should actually be giving our feet daily attention. Whether we are diabetic, suffer from hypertension, or are perfectly healthy, even children should pay special attention to their feet. Our feet will carry us average of 115,000 miles in a lifetime, so avoiding foot problems should be a priority for everyone (http://www.villagepodiatrycenters.com/).

Here are just a few tips for healthy Feet according to http://www.villagepodiatrycenters.com/:
- Inspect feet daily using a mirror; look for injuries, cracks, peeling, and dry skin.
- Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and between your toes to prevent burns and skin cancer.
- Allow toe nails time to “breathe” and recover from the effects of nail polish; leave off the polish for several months each year.
- Always wear shoes in public places to avoid foot fungus or plantar warts and cuts that can lead to infection.
- Dry your feet and between toes after showering to avoid fungal infections.
I know what you’re thinking – “Has another month already gone by?” That’s right! The beginning of a new month brings new adventures, new challenges, and – you guessed it - another new blog post! We have one more component of fitness to cover, but we’re going to take a break from that this month.
As the weather turns colder, and holiday busyness ensues, I have a countless number of people tell me that they find it harder to exercise this time of the year. Whether it’s because of the chilly temperatures, entertaining company or holiday activities, exercise often takes a back seat during the month of December.
With that being said, let me ask you a question. Would you purposely skip your blood pressure medication because you’re busy? Would you neglect taking a life-saving medicine because your family is in town? Hopefully the answers to those questions are a resounding “No!” If you’ll remember back to the blog post on the five components of fitness, you’ll remember that exercise IS a medicine! Taking this “medicine” should be a part of your daily routine.
Today, I’m going to give you some tips to help you overcome the barrier of busyness. Below, you’ll find ways to include activity in your day, even when your days are full of holiday activities. In bold, you’ll see common barriers, and my responses will immediately follow.
“But it’s too cold!”: Cold weather can be a deterrent for those who exercise outside. If you’re a member of a fitness center, move your outside workouts to inside. Southeastern Lifestyle Center has an indoor track that is perfect for walking. However, if you are exercising outside, wear layers. This will help keep you warm, while still allowing your body to breathe. Also, lengthen your warm-up. By increasing the length of your warm-up, you allow more time for your body to acclimate to the cold.
“My kids are out of school”: Children are never too young to be introduced to the power of exercise! Make workouts a family affair. Sheila’s post for this month has tips for exercising around your home, with varying levels. Taking a family walk several nights a week is a great way to keep active, and include your whole family.
“I’m waiting until January. You know, New Year’s Resolution.”: Why wait? By choosing to exercise now, you’ll be a month ahead of those who wait. Actor Christopher Parker said, “Procrastination is like a credit card: It’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.” There’s great truth in that statement. Remember that each day you choose to exercise is a day closer to your goal. Start today because you’re worth it!
